Founded in 1965, the Chequamegon Symphony Orchestra (CSO) is a now a community civic orchestra based in Ashland Wisconsin. Originally called the Chequamegon Symphonette, it was started by Donald Jackson and Jay Winking, and has continued under the direction of Roland Stycos, Professor Emeritus Joel Glickman (43-year tenure), Jesika Cane, and current director Nathan Mitchell. In the fragile state of non-profit community arts organizations, to survive in a rural area for almost 60 years is remarkable.

The CSO performs concerts with an eclectic variety of repertoire, including the classics, pops, and concertos featuring guest artists. Conductor Nathan Mitchell is passionate about diversifying concert programs, the inclusion of all, and reaching out to diverse groups of people using the power of symphonic music.

The CSO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The orchestra rehearses and performs at Ashland High School and occasionally at local churches. If you are a musician interested in joining the CSO, please send an email to [email protected].

Chequamegon Symphony Orchestra Mission Statement

The Chequamegon Symphony Orchestra's mission is to give area musicians the opportunity to perform symphonic literature in a community-based orchestra and to provide orchestral performances that enrich the cultural life of northern Wisconsin at a price that minimizes financial barriers to attendance.
