Featured Composer: Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was an English composer who achieved acclaim in the early 20th century. His most noted composition is the trilogy based on Longfellow's Song of Hiawatha - Hiawatha's Wedding Feast (1898), The Death of Minnehaha (1899), and Hiawatha's Departure (1900), written for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra. Coleridge-Taylor, whose father was of African descent, sought to integrate African music into the classical tradition. He died at 37 from pneumonia.
